Capella Kyoto, located in Miyagawacho in Kyoto’s Higashiyama district, adjacent to Kennin-ji Temple and within easy reach of Gion and the Kamo River, is the first Capella luxury hotel to open in Japan, occupying the former site of Shinmichi Elementary School. The interior design, conceived by BREWIN DESIGN OFFICE, draws inspiration from Kyoto’s distinctive spatial experience, where scenery and light shift subtly as one moves deeper into a space. By bringing the city’s context and landscape into the interior, the design seeks to create an environment whose character unfolds gradually, revealing a quiet sense of depth with every step. As the local design partner, we carefully translated this vision and philosophy into the built environment. The hotel’s 89 guest rooms, together with its public areas—including the lobby lounge, restaurant, spa, and banquet facilities—each possess a distinct identity while maintaining a cohesive atmosphere throughout. Natural materials such as solid wood, stone, ceramics, and washi paper, chosen for the richness they acquire over time, are thoughtfully combined with details that evoke the landscapes and cultural character of Kyoto, creating a gentle continuity across the entire property.
