The Tenryuji Temple (Soto Zen temple) is a family temple built in memory of "Oainokata," who gave birth to Hidetada Tokugawa, the second shogun, and her father, Tadaharu. Though the temple is in the din of constant noise close to Koshukaido and Meijidori in Shinjuku, a sloped inner court between the main building and a residence was designed so people in a semi-basement reception hall would greatly appreciate nature and tranquility. The buildings were arranged in a simple Zen sect style.
